Evaluation of the ISCED 1997 for Comparative Research

This team intends to contribute to improve comparability of education measurement and educational indicators in Europe by methodological and substantive work to assess the validity, reliability and international comparability of educational classifications commonly used in public statistics and social research. It will especially evaluate for countries in Western and Eastern Europe the ISCED 1997 educational classification (as used in the EU-LFS and ESS) by examining the crosswalks used to derive ISCED from the national educational classifications (through which education is usually measured in national surveys). It will link a range of outcomes with education measured in the national format, different versions of ISCED and CASMIN and it will be compared how well (or how badly= the different educational attainment measures work. Better knowledge on how the classifications work in different countries might be useful for other EQUALSOC researchers who use education in their comparative research.
