Finding a suitable job: The effect of the institutional context over self-perceived overeducation(Luis Ortiz Gervasi)Resorting to data from Denmark, France, Italy and Spain, drawn from the second wave (1995) of the European Community Household Panel Survey, this work explores the institutional determinants of self-perceived overeducation, namely by looking at the different systems of education and labour market regulation. Denmark has been selected as an example of a ‘qualificational space’, where special attention is paid to vocational training and to obtaining a perfect match between qualifications drawn from the educational system and actual task requirements at the workplace. France, Italy and Spain have been selected as examples of ‘organizational spaces’, with more generalist systems of education and where less attention is paid to vocational training. Yet, within this latter group there are differences in labour market regulation that could also affect skill mismatch. Accounting for effects of gender, age, tenure, as well as external and internal mobility (both are theoretical mechanisms of correcting overeducation), preliminary empirical evidence shows that education is, as expected, more strongly associated with overeducation in France, Italy and Spain. Yet, differences between them are found in the self-perception of overeducation that might be related to the different role and importance that temporary contracts play in these countries.download this file
