Schooling Inequalities in Italy and their Trends over Time(Carlo Barone)This paper focuses on schooling inequalities related to social origins and analyzes whether they have changed over the 20th century in Italy. Some statistical analyses concerning Italy, as well as other countries, have recently led to the conclusion that schooling inequalities have weakened in recent decades, against the results obtained by many previous studies. At present, there are several analyses concerning trends of educational inequalities in Italy, but no agreed conclusion, at least as far as secondary education is concerned. Our primary challenge, therefore, is to establish the causes of this substantive disagreement. This paper is meant as a contribution in this direction, with specific reference to the Italian case. I employ binomial logistic regression techniques in order to analyze educational transitions and I compare the results for two different datasets. My results point to an overall stability of inequalities of educational opportunities in Italy and they suggest some possible explanations for previous substantive disagreement.download this file
